Established in early 2025, Bow-Nut Bites is a human grade treat company using only natural ingredients each chosen either for its nutritional content, health benefits, or to avoid certain allergies or insensitivities.
Most recipes were created to combat health issues with Bowie and Peanut, the dogs who inspired the entire company.
After reading books written by veterinarians, blog posts from vet nutritionists, reddit posts from people who had switched to homemade with great success, etc. for months, what I learned was frightening.
Many commercial pet foods, while “technically” nutritionally complete, are overly processed mixes of byproducts of the meat industry (see chicken byproduct, or animal byproduct on the back of dog food bags), tons of carbohydrates, and a few other ingredients to help it look healthy.
The problem is that the recipe is then cooked, usually multiple times, to the point where it is mostly devoid of any original nutrition and then has that nutrition added back to the food using many artificial ingredients and supplements.
We also use human grade safety practices in a kitchen space we rent from Culinary Collective, making our products fully human grade by avoiding any cross contamination and ensuring treats are safe.
